Our nation is a proud and glorious melting pot of immigrants, and we are especially lucky that these courageous souls brought their food with them when they came here. Many simply brought seeds from their gardens and not much else. Traditions inspired by many of our own families’ brave, world-class ancestors are those worthy of celebration this Memorial Day weekend.

We’ve got tips for how to play and dine well on this long weekend, including where to respectfully honor America’s heroes on Monday.

To begin, mix some global influence with a little Americana. Invite family and friends to explore new possibilities of dining choices, and commit to at least one adventurous meal. It’s fun and easy to find fantastic, local, international foods. Most importantly, time together at the table is what makes holiday weekends special.

The following are some favorite spots for world dining right here near home:

Bollywood Zaika - amazing, casual, counter-service Indian; (South) Redondo Beach

Al Hamra Halal Café - outstanding Middle Eastern; (North) Redondo Beach

Rabano - innovative, farm-fresh, fabulous mix of Asian and Latin; Hermosa Beach

Fatto a Mano - handmade pastas, contemporary Italian; (South) Redondo Beach

If you simply prefer the classiest, most delicious twist on California cuisine -

Chelsea “Menu by Darren’s” Lounge; Hermosa Beach.

If it’s gotta be American - as in BBQ – check out Bartz at the El Segundo Brewing Company.

On Saturday, go all-out Spanish at La Espanola Meats in Harbor City. Savor tastings of imported cheeses and olives and in-house-made salame and sausage. Enjoy authentic paella (order in advance) and sandwiches/specialties from the deli counter; dine in the patio that is always filled with internationals. This (and every last) Saturday, there is live flamenco guitar and dancing from 12-3pm. Your entire visit will feel like an extraordinary experience of the real Spain.

Enjoy some festival time too! Right by the sea, Fiesta Hermosa is in full swing all day Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Arts&crafts, food, drink, live music, and lots of family fun keep children of all ages entertained from morning til night.

On Monday, honor America and its celebrated veterans at the annual Veterans Park Memorial Day Monday service and BBQ. Everyone is invited and welcome to attend.

Enjoy a great, safe, and very Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
