The City of Hawthorne was established in 1905 by two real estate developers named B.L.Harding and H.D. Lombard. They named the city after the famed New England author, Nathanial Hawthorne. The city has an area of 6.1 square miles and is home to approximately 90,000 people. Hawthorne is located a few miles inland from the coast and is surrounded by the cities of Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Lawndale and Gardena.
The Century freeway and San Diego freeway provide access to anywhere in Southern California. Hawthorne airport serves the needs of many private plane owners. The city is home to several major employers including Northrop Aircraft which developed the B2 stealth bomber, Tesla Motors has its design center located here, and SpaceX Corporation is currently developing reusable space rockets. The location of major employers attracts many citizens who want the convenience of living close to their employment.
The Bodger Park tract features conforming homes of generally 3 bedrooms and 2 baths and approximately 1200 sq. ft. Many of the homes have been expanded over the years to include additional bedrooms or family rooms. The Wiseburn tract is an unincorporated area which uses a Hawthorne mailing address. This area is a pleasant tract of homes build in the 1950's. It's popular because it has its own school district including the DaVinci school which offers a project-based learning environment that is popular today.
Hawthorne Boulevard offers many options for dining and shopping. The Manhattan Mall, located in Manhattan Beach is just a few miles away and is a very popular destination for upscale shopping and dining.
For buyers who are priced out of higher cost beach cities along the coast, Hawthorne is a good alternative to get a foothold in the South bay and still have the beach close by.
